College Women Development Cell
In response to the Vishaka Judgment passed by the Supreme Court in 1997, the University of Mumbai set up the ‘University Women Development Cell (UWDC)’ with the key purpose of making the University a gender-sensitive space. The University also directed all its affiliated colleges to set up a ‘Women Development Cell’ at college level.
In compliance of this directive of the University, the Women Development Cell of UPG College was set up. The Cell has both the faculty and students of the College as its members and works with an aim to create a gender sensitized community within the campus as well as in the society. It has been organising varied academic, cultural and social events for the upliftment of women and spread the importance of gender equality & gender sensitivity in the society through the College students
SOME MAJOR INITIATIVES/PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES/EVENTS:

Every year the WDC collaborates with a NGO listed under the University of Mumbai collaborations several events, workshops, seminars are conducted with them.

Week long Self-defence workshops are organized under a certified trainer twice a year.

Seminar about the basic Rights of women including Article 14 and Article 16 with lawyers are held.

‘Gender equity in the times of crisis- Queer resilience, struggles and stories.’ An event to spread awareness and to support LGBTQIA Community.

Sessions to educate about physical health and mental health for Women

A seminar with Nausheen Yousuf, a Practicing Lawyer and Social activist from Majlis where topics such as Triple Talaq, Khulla, infringement of privacy while collecting proofs for court, Contradictory Laws, Mental Torture, Domestic Violence were covered, and

A workshop on “UNDERSTANDING THE GENDER SPECTRUM” conducted by Advocate Mallika Verma, a practicing Lawyer and a Social Activist from Majlis.
