M.A. (Mass Communication – Film Television and New Media)

 

ELIGIBILITY : Students who have passed a bachelor’s course from any discipline/faculty of recognized University (by UGC Council or any other competent body appointed for the said purpose by the due authority)

 

DURATION : 2 years (Four Semesters)

With over 20 years of dedicated service in education, Prof. Ashish Mehta has profoundly shaped the academic and professional journeys of countless students. His expertise and passion for mentoring students have left an indelible mark. Prof. Mehta's extensive contributions encompass coordinating undergraduate programs, enhancing value-added programs, and teaching postgraduate courses. Additionally, his insights and knowledge are frequently sought after, as he regularly serves as a guest speaker on various esteemed platforms.

Prof. Mehta holds double Master's degrees— one in Commerce with a specialization in Management and another in Arts with majors in Entertainment Media and Advertising. He has also co-authored three non-fictional books on creative writing and economic perspective of Indian Liter-ature and global literature. and three fictional books titled Mumbai Monsoon melodies, Regret and redemption , The soul Cafe - 2050 . He is currently a research scholar pursuing a Ph.D. in media. His remarkable work in education, particularly in literature and language, has earned him an award from the Rotaract Club of Mumbai. In 2023, Prof. Mehta was also honoured by The Times Group as one of the top 10 change-makers in the edutainment sector. Instrumental in developing the curriculum and syllabus for the Maharashtra State Board of Skill Development, an initiative by the Government of Maharashtra, he has played a crucial role in advancing skill and vocational training. Prof. Mehta's collaborative spirit is beautifully highlighted by his partnership with the Film Division of India, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, contributing to the success of the 16th and 17th Mumbai International Film Festivals. His dedication to education and industry collaboration continues to make a significant impact on both the academic community and the broader industry landscape.

Television, and New Media program at SVKM's Usha Pravin Gandhi College of Arts, Science, and Commerce in Mumbai.

Shalu S. Balan is a distinguished author, artist, educator, and media expert specializing in film, television, and new media (FTNM). With a unique blend of IT and media design expertise, he holds a Master’s in Mass Media and a Bachelor’s in Computer Applications (BCA). His career seamlessly integrates technology and creativity, making him a leading figure in post-production, visual effects (VFX), digital media design, and metaverse experiences.

Recognized for his excellence in teaching, Professor Balan was awarded "Grade A Level Faculty" by Aptech Limited and has received numerous state and national-level awards across Arena, education, and media fields. His contributions to media education bridge the gap between traditional editing techniques and cutting-edge AI-driven workflows, shaping the next generation of media professionals.

Beyond academia, he has an impressive portfolio of industry projects. He has worked on renowned animated series such as Motu Patlu, Rosie, and Charlie Chaplin, contributing his expertise in animation and post-production. As Creative Director at XRFX Studios Pvt Ltd, he played a key role in developing Meta and Snap AR Lenses, pushing the boundaries of immersive media and augmented reality.

His expertise extends to the Metaverse, where he has worked on projects for Snapchat and developed games for Meta at Superfan.ai. His innovative approach to virtual experiences, game development, and AR/VR content creation showcases his deep understanding of emerging technologies and their applications in media and entertainment.

As an author of the book Graphic Design Journal, he continues to contribute valuable insights to the field of media production, sharing his knowledge and expertise with a global audience. Studied Film Making from Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune (1987-1990) M.A. in Theatre (Direction and Production)Punjab University UGC-NET (JRF) Qualified in Dramatic Arts, Film and Television An Indian Producer, Director, and Writer with an extensive career spanning television drama, documentaries, and socially driven cinema. Also known for seamlessly bridging popular television storytelling with historically rooted and culturally significant documentary cinema. The AI film "The Echo Monastery" (???? ??????) won the Best AI Film award at the International Film Festival of Delhi (LTM × IFFD 2026), selected from over 200 entries and judged by a jury led by Shekhar Kapur and Rakesh Omprakash Mehra. The film demonstrated that AI filmmaking can achieve cinematic depth, cultural richness, and emotional authenticity at a fraction of conventional production costs. OpenFrame AI Labs — His AI-driven creative and education studio — has just been selected for incubation by FTII (Film & Television Institute of India), one of India's most prestigious film institutions. This partnership positions him at the forefront of AI filmmaking research, production, and training in India.
